Serving God's Purposes in Our Generation (Acts 13:36b)

Jesus Christ is the Reason For the Season

Isaiah 6: 2, 6-7   For To Us a Child Is Born  2 The people walking in darkness        have seen a great light;        on those living in the land of the shadow of death [a]        a light has dawned.  6 For to us a child is born,        to us a son is given,        and the government will be on his shoulders.        And he will be called        Wonderful Counselor, [b] Mighty God,        Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  7 Of the increase of his government and peace        there will be no end.        He…

Chocolate Pleasures And Shopping

According to a British survey over 70 % of women prefer chocolate over sex. I say that's very right. I'll settle for chocolate pleasure anytime. I got a coupon for free chocolates at Godiva, which usually charges $2.95 per piece. When I got my samples, I was a bit disappointed. Since the chocolates were expensive, I thought I would be sinking into a state of pure bliss. Godiva chocolates are not that much different from Lindt chocolates or Ferrero Rocher that I can get from Safeway for much less (like $7 for a box). What a bunch of marketing hype!…

Kids As Young As Ten On Birth Control?

Few weeks ago, I heard this report on ABC evening news - at a school in Portland (Maine), they are going to distribute birth control pills to middle schoolers? Once again parental rights and sexual morality is colliding head on. Argument is that kids lives are being ruined by unwanted pregnancies, so why don’t we ask them to protect themselves and why don’t school administration distribute condoms and birth control pills? Children do not need to seek parental consent in taking these pills and in sexual experimentations. Why is public school becoming a brothel? This only promotes promiscuous behaviors among…

Delaying Marriage

The young adult population in America is postponing marriage. The census report that almost three-quarters of men and almost two-thirds of women in their 20s in 2006 said they had never been married. This shows a sharp increase in never-married twentysomethings in America between 2000 and 2006. See the report in USA Today. The old trend of marrying your high school sweetheart or meeting someone at college and get married soon after graduation, isn’t the way to go these days. People are longer in school, working through many jobs, try to pay up your college debt and not to mention…

My Awesome, Wonderful Sister

With a recent conversation I found out that she is passionate about being a cop. She started volunteering in a prison and took an introductory class. She is meeting other cops and getting favor from supervisors. Getting into police dept. is tough and competitive. This job requires guts and much under appreciated. She sees her job as a ministry, a chance as a Christian to stand up for justice and serve people. Why limit ministry to the pulpit? In my opinion, a pastor isn't necessarily more gifted or has a special level of annointing than a functioning Christian in a…

What It Means For Us To Be Holy In Our Lives

In this article, we will focus on ‘what it means for us to be holy in our lives’. Often the concept of Christian holiness is misunderstood and misinterpreted and this results in a lot of pseudo-holiness (fake or false holiness which is not biblical). There are people who think that holiness is about wearing white clothes or men having short hair or women having long hair, not watching any movies of any kind, anywhere, at any time, not watching TV, not wearing jewelry, and so on. The tendency is to totally externalize holiness. This is a very superficial understanding. However, when we look into the Bible we find that the heart of Christian holiness is, primarily the holiness of the heart. Of course, this holiness of the heart is manifested in our external behavior – words, actions, reactions, relationships, etc. Therefore, in this study we will try to understand our holiness in all its aspects or dimensions in a biblically balanced manner.

Not Mahatma Gandhi but Jesus Christ

In May 2005, I was in South Korea in connection with my work as a lead consultant with a multinational firm. A work related problem was vexing me. After trying many solutions, I was left clueless. The problem appeared intractable. I was at my wit’s end and frustrated. . . . . In December that same year, I was in China confronting a far serious problem. Failure to resolve it would mean an end of the project. The team would have returned admitting failure. The system had crashed. Then I recalled my Korean experience and called my wife on the phone. She listened to the problem and then told me that she would pray and the system would be revived.

Relationships

One of the things I do occasionally in my spare time is read up on the recent threads on the PCNAK youth website’s discussion board. Interestingly enough, someone started up this topic of youth moving to different states (for college perhaps) so that they can live closer to their boyfriend or girlfriend, thus making it easier for the two of them to see each other more often. And sometimes these arrangements work out and the two eventually get married. Or the two figure out that they’re not compatible and call off the relationship. And sometimes, it blows up in their…

Young Adults Quiting Church

About three-fourths of young people quit church. Lifeway Research (Southern Baptist) says they know the reasons why 70 percent of 18-year-olds who attended church regularly in high school quit by age 23: they don’t like it. And by age 30, 34 percent still have not rebounded. That means one in four young Protestants has left the church. Read the report in Christianity Today or Lifeway Research. So why do they drop out? On their laundry list of reasons: they wanted a break (27%), church is too judgmental (26%), they moved away to college (25%), busy with work (23%). On the…

Looking For Love

A commentary on Korn’s song  "Somebody, Someone” by Samuel Thambusamy A commentary on the song Somebody, Someone by KORNkorn.jpg (1) Popular culture does give expression to the desire and despair of the human heart. Somebody Someone is all about longing for love [not just looking for love]. The discourse of human ‘desire’ and/or ‘despair’ for relationality finds musical expression in the (nu metal) song . (2)Somebody, Someone highlights the desire in every individual to love and be loved. The need for relationality is in-built. I guess, that’s what makes us human. Machines have no need “to love” and “be loved”.…

The Rainbow Promise

 - On my way to guitar lessons with my mom, we look up and there right in front of us so clearly and spectacular was a rainbow. I'd never seen one as beautiful as this. It was so strong that it either had a shadow behind it or a second rainbow. It was perfectly arched. My high school knowledge about the colors of the spectrum ROYGBIV finally came into use as my mom wondered what colors were in the rainbow. It was marvelous. The entire car ride my mom kept muttering about the the rainbow and God's promises to us…

I Hope She Looks Like Mom

Shainu and I are 4 weeks away from the due date for our first child….a baby girl! Among the many things I’ve prayed for this child, here’s one that I whisper in my heart often: God please let her look like her mom. Maybe it’s my four-foot-long nose that I don’t want this child to inherit or the receding hairline that runs rampant in my family; but I would be thrilled if she shared some of her mother’s traits. And I don’t just mean physically. If she could be hospitable, and encouraging, and thoughtful, and godly like her mother is…

Child Laborers In India

There are reportedly 12 million child laborers in India who sweat it out everyday in shops and factories for meagre salary or paying up for their parent’s debt. I can’t imagine in the early 21st century with pervasive media and so much talk about human rights (not to mention the economic boom in India) we still have millions of young ones who are forced into bonded labor. Many of Delhi’s lost children work in Shahpurjaat. In a recent raid by polic, fourteen children were rescued from the building making clothes for international retailer, the Gap. They work for more than…

Christian Yoga

This will be a controversial topic for some. I have started doing yoga from a book, "Yoga for Christians" by Susan Bordenkircher. She teaches how to do yoga and get the benefits of yoga while praying to Jesus and directing yoga towards creatively worshipping our God.While I am doing yoga, I focus on the beauties and promises of God's kingdom. Or for example while I am doing strengthening poses or warrior poses, I mediate and picture myself as a spiritual warrior of God that stands up for Him and about being an emissary for Jesus. Or if it's a soft…

Home

1. They say "Home is where the heart is"...except, I don't really know where my heart is... 2. It's my last week in Vancouver, BC... and probably my last week in Canada for a while. It's a weird feeling, not entirely unfamiliar since I've moved so much, but sad nonetheless. 3. What's in my future? India. Hopefully even Singapore. Anywhere away from North America. I feel kinda restless--like I want to get out and see and experience and travel and throw myself completely into mission work and ministry and whatever God has for me... As exciting as it sounds, it's…

Quotes

Stations On The Way To FreedomThe following is a long quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s book Ethics. It continues to move me deeply. Self-DisciplineIf you set out to seek freedom, you must learn before all thingsMastery over sense and soul, lest your wayward desirings,Lest your undisciplined members lead you now this way, now that way.Chaste be your mind and your body, and subject to you and obedient,Serving solely to seek their appointed goal and objective.None learns the secret of freedom save only by way of control. ActionDo and dare what is right, not swayed by the whim of the moment.Bravely take…

No Excuse, Please!

Reading: Luke 14:18-20; Esther 4:7-16 "If you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise from another place" (Esther 4:14)  The famous CMC Hospital in South India was founded by Missionary Dr. Ida Scudder (1870-1959). She was born this day. Because of her implicit obedience to God's call, without giving any excuse, India received this blessing. I had the privilege of serving in this Hospital in Vellore from 1971 to 1975. We are good at giving excuses when there is a call from God. When Moses was called to go to Pharaoh to take His people out…

‘Unwanted’ Girls Aborted Among Indians In The West

Coming to the West hasn’t changed all that much. The cultural baggages and gender stereotypes still exist among Indians who have settled in the West. A recent research publication proved it beyond a shadow of doubt, in a rather controversial issue - Female Foeticide or Infanticide (abortion of girls). Check out the entire report in Times and Telegraph. The same may be true of Indians in North America ( I don’t know of any similar studies done yet.) Researchers at Oxford University have carried out a probe and found that a number of Indian-born women living in Britain are aborting…
