Leadership Lessons: Burnout | Wilson Mathews

There is a great need for strong leadership in Christian ministries to be effective. Without good leadership thriving, Christian ministries can fall at the wayside. This can occur when workers burnout and end up permanently leaving their positions. It is important for leaders to recognize signs of when this can occur and make the necessary adjustments to save their ministry from the possibility of dissolving.

In order to prevent burnout in Christian ministry, it is important for leaders to develop foresight. Foresight is the ability of leaders to reasonably predict the outcome of any situations that can lead to burnout. Good foresight will be able to recognize barriers that impede effective functioning of Christian workers ahead of time and make necessary adjustments. This is an important skill that needs to be applied when assessing worker performance.

Foresight combined with thorough performance evaluations can help maintain Christian workers in a sustainable way. It is vital to recognize the patterns that contribute to worker burnout beforehand. According to Bishop Dale C Bonner, burnout can occur when workers fall into the following patterns:

Their Pace Is Too Fast
They Are Running Someone’s Else Race
They Run For Too Long
Their Environment Is Toxic
Their Life Is Disorganised
They Don’t Laugh Enough
They Don’t Do Enough To Refresh Themselves.

Alongside these patterns, other factors that can also contribute to worker burnout.

Leaders who do not recognize and move workers in their spiritual gifting are susceptible to overworking their staff. Strong Christian leaders will identify the spiritual giftings of their workers and do their best to move them in those areas. There are many spiritual gifting inventories and checklists that can help recognize and distribute workers in the areas they are gifted in. The Bible makes it clear that Christians are to move in their giftings,

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with yourfaith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:6-8

One of the great benefits of moving workers in their giftings is that they do their work with greater level of ease, comfort, excellence and some draw strength and find it stimulating. This can help counteract the possibility of burnout. When this does not happen, it can lead workers to feel frustrated, tired, irritable and weak. It is much like trying to fit a square in a round hole or trying to get an eye to function like a hand. This must be avoided at all costs as it becomes very taxing.

When Christian leaders recognize warning signs of overworking their members and properly delegate the ministry according to giftings, they not only avoid burnout but become more effective, maintain retention, and increase efficiency.
