I am now officially “addicted” I now develop “cold turkey” if I am not hooked for more than two or three hours. Yes, I am talking about the withdrawal symptoms one gets when one does not get the “fix” one desperately wants. If you have seen the three words that I placed in quotes – they are usually used in the same sentence when one is describing a person who is hooked to drugs.
Nowadays, pastors emphasize church growth by focusing on successful strategies for understanding their surrounding culture and target audience, and examining their congregations to determine their strengths and weaknesses. What follows is an arduous process of changing the culture of a church to reflect the new methodologies in order to fulfill its mission.
Several years ago, I published a piece of research into the top 100 Company Boards and the relationship with technology-related matters. The results were "shocking but not surprising": none of the Boards had any definition for technology competence, and none of them assessed their own competence about technological matters.
Reading: Matthew 9:9-13
Mission-minded churches attempt great things for God and expect great
things from God. There are members who are good at making comments and
criticism about what is and should be happening. As a result there is
undue concern for self maintenance (cleaning nets), rather than obeying
God’s voice or meeting people’s needs. Obedience always leads to
blessing; delayed obedience is disobedience. Faith missions is simply
taking God at his word. Attempt something so great, that it’s doomed to
fail except God be in it!
Last night, Shainu and I were invited to a banquet for Mission Year. Mission Year is an organization that sends young people to cities across the country to love and serve a particular neighborhood for a period of one year. So nine different cities in the US (one of them being Philadelphia) have Mission Year folks working in them right now.
Many people in the church are so emotionally incapacitated due to father
or parental wounds they do not have a healthy view of any authority in
their lives. When someone comes to Christ these emotional issues
don’t automatically go away. Unless someone intentionally points out
these areas and aids a person in repenting of their mistrust of
authority, most with these wounds will have a hard time receiving
correction from any form of spiritual authority. Satan will even plant
seeds into the minds of Christians regarding blame shifting (blaming
others for their own sins and failures, and not taking personal
responsibility) when their pastor preaches a strong message involving
correction for sin, or when a spiritual authority has to give them
correction. Some get angry and might even leave the church.
My motto is "Have some wine and think how good life is..." Recently, I lounged in Portland City Grill. With a drink in one hand and gazing over the city and view, I relaxed and thought about the good things of life. For a moment I forgot that I was in a crowded place. I thought about the goodness and things in life I am looking forward to.
Interesting as they may be, low purposes ultimately let you down since once the challenge is conquered, disappointment sets in.
Yasmeen Suri was born in India to a Sikh family. They moved to America when she was a child. She didn't speak English, and unfortunately, because of her ethnicity, she was the brunt of cruel jokes from the other children. She says, I felt a sense of loss of control of my life. So I
thought the more I could get of knowledge and spiritual experience, the more I would be able to control my environment and the more I would be
able to control people.
