Interesting People

1. Bobby is arriving sometime before tomorrow morning. 2. Met with my Hindi/Urdu prof and got a bunch of stuff that was really stressing me out straightened. One less thing on my mind. 3. Work was so crazy today! Everything is on sale! Sometimes I don't like sales because they attract the stingier crowds who want to bargain on everything and make a fuss about everything too. People and their Christmas shopping... God help me! Scenario 1:Person picks up shoe A: "Do you have this in size 5.0?"Me: "No we don't carry size 5.0, our smallest is 5.5."Person picks up…

Looking Back & Stopping To Reflect

This year is coming to an abrupt close. Sights are now set on Christmas time and the New Year. I was telling this to a friend of mine and I want to tell it to you my readers. We think at times that as we get older that time goes by a lot quicker. I was thinking about this the other day and I’ve theorized that as we mature and become older, we begin looking further backward and further forward into time. By this I mean we assess further backward into our past, and assess further forward into our future.…

Digital Life

The ambitious Indian American parents are daily raising the bar for their children - more academic and extra-curricular activities than ever before. Extra math and science classes, advance standing courses…. every parents is trying to make their kids into a prodigy (and into ivy league colleges!). Then soccer, basketball, swimming and Lacrosse (their Indian friends are still figuring out what kinds of a game is that!) Then there is cultural elements - learning Indian music, Instruments, dances, languages  etc. Not to mention faith of their forefathers. Parents often say, “We came to America to provide best of opportunity for our…

Another Week of Sleepless Nights

1. It's going to be another week of sleepless nights and typing up loads of **** which I will eventually turn in under the guise of 'Research Paper'. 2. Finally, got a burned copy of the God's Not Dead (the GenUnleashed CD). *smile* 3. It's interesting how I learn practically nothing during the term and then learn an entire term's worth of information during exam week. And then I think to myself--"Mann! If I'd known this stuff before, I could actually consider myself intelligent." But alas, I am a hopeless fool who's bound to procrastinate all term and then cram…

Practical Faith

Why do people make the calling of God some out-there, super-spiritual, phenomenon? Calling in simple terms is obedience and faithful allegiance to God. It stems from a relationship with God—not own merits. Calling is so often misunderstood . . . the way God is working on my life, I may not know what my 'calling' is until my death. I am finding out more and more that I do not need to sit around and wait for a calling to do something such as helping out in a ministry for the time being or going on a short-term mission trip. Get out there and God will guide you. I want to go to different places just for the experience and opportunities. That is when God speaks to you and you grow in Christ and become a more mature person.

India – Diabetic Capital of the World

India has a new dubious distinction now - Diabetic capital of the world! A recent report tells about the dramatic rise in diabetic cases in India, amouting for nearly 25% of cases in the world. WHO reports that by 2025, India will have over 57 million cases of type 2 diabetic. November 14th is the World Diabetic Day (never heard of that?) Guess what, Indians are some of the leading medical reserachers and scientists in this field. In my own families,  many suffer from Diabetics and I have lost some due to this disease. Changing lifestyles, work habits, diets, new…

Sunita Williams – Second Astronaut of Indian Origin Off To Space

Sunita Williams -the second Astronaut of Indian origin, was lifted off into space on space shuttle Discovery this week. The Indian and Indian American had been closely following this and are proud of the achievement. Of course, they also remember the tragic accident shuttle Columbia and death of Kalpana Chawla some five years ago. Check out their story on USA Today. Here is official NASA biography of Sunita Williams. Read more about Sunita Williams -http://www.rediff.com/us/2003/jan/03us.htm. Updates on the trip - http://www.dailyindia.com/show/92468.php/Discovery-astronauts-finish-spacewalk-Suni-begins-duty http://cocogen.wordpress.com

Cravings

1. cleaned my room yesterday. it's spotless now, you're all invited in. 2. watched bunty aur babli last night. i loved it! it reminded me of catch me if you can which i liked as well. i love rani for taking the not-so-traditional roles. most of the movie was believable except for maybe babli's miraculous recovery when they make their get-away towards the end. 3. my paper had reached a page and a half in courier new, 12-point, double-spaced font. hopefully by tonight it'll be somewhere near fifteen (wishful thinking i know). at least the intro is done and i…

Dating

My parents want me to date more. I had a conversation with my mom, which started off as, "If you don't date, how are you ever going to find your husband?" I have only gone out on two "dates" within the last year. One, was with my Dad. It was an office event. Everyone dressed up and it was at a really nice upscale restaurant. I liked dressing up, listening to the music on the background, spending time with Dad and conversing with some of his colleages. I went out with a friend last week but I can't really call…

One More Week Left!!!

During the last few weeks, I had so many papers due. I just turned in two papers this week and I feel such a relief. I will be up late tonight finishing on a paper for American Literature. Why do I get the best ideas late night or in the shower? This is the last paper and one class presentation for a psychology class. I got another 10 page paper back and I got an A. I feel great and can't help feeling slightly proud of myself because that professor is quite demanding. I was nervous about his class but…

Singleness Not A Disease!

Recently I was talking with a marriageable single lady and heard her view of the how rest of the community views them. She confided that people think that there is something wrong with her. If you are not married within a certain age or stage in life, it brings lots of shame to their parents. Parents are constantly bombarded from their peers, “why isn’t your son/daughter settled down yet?” They are often shunned as people treated like lepers of the past! In the Indian arranged marriage system, it was parent’s responsibility to find a spouse for their children. But how things…

Christian Media: 2007 and Beyond!

The quality of our programming and publication must change. We need quality. We need world-class production values. Most importantly, we need creativity. We need a committed and creative work force that will think differently to get the collective attentions of Christians and non-Christians around the world. This applies to both the visual and print media. There is a need for a modern, young and vibrant language. And let’s not preach to the young. We resent it. Instead utilize us. We have a greater role to play, especially in today’s context . . . Read on as Syd Vartak challenges this young, vivacious generation to bring a tremendous change to all Christian media.

Kids Growing Up Faster

Children are growing up sooner these days. Child development experts say physical and behavioral changes that would have been typical of teenagers decades ago are common among children age 8 to 12. Read the story in Chicago Tribune, LA Times. Younger kids are going on “dates” and have cell phones. They listen to sexually charged pop music, play mature-rated video games and spend time gossiping on MySpace. And girls wear makeup and clothing some adults consider beyond their years. They are watching R movies and sexually explicit content on Internet. Sexual experimentation has also begun earlier. At 12. they even…

Woke Up Really Early . . . Then Went Back To Sleep

i was in a grumpy mood since this morning, i woke up late, actually i woke up really early turned off my alarm, then went back to sleep, and then i woke up late, traffic was misplaced today, the drive into campus looked serene but it was really deceptively trecherous, and it was terribly cold, unwholesomely cold- by this i mean -10 degrees C. but this is vancouver, so that's cold. i went to my stats class where i realized i don't like math at all. then went to Koerner library where i let my toes freeze for about an…
