God speaks to us when we really want to hear Him. When are hearts are still before Him, we can hear Him. I used to be doubtful about hearing God’s voice when I was younger but now I know better. We might not hear him audibly, infact that seldom happens these days, but He has given us the Holy Spirit for a reason.
The Holy Spirit in us prompts us and if our hearts at peace and our eyes are focused on Jesus, we will be able to hear that small, still voice and know God is speaking to us.
Just the other day, I was feeling so down. I seldom feel down, seriously. My friends will tell you how I am always smiling, (‘your face doesn’t hurt or what?’) or how I sometimes burst out laughing for no apparent reason.
But that day, I just felt so sad, you know, one of those nobody- loves –me- I –want- to- eat- worms- kind –of-day. Mainly it was because of some disappointing circumstances in my life (one of the causes: myself).
Also, I have been having a desire to know God much more deeply. So, I was sitting on my bed, in tears. The Bible was in front of me. Suddenly I just felt like praying, so I did. I asked God why certain things had happened, basically a lot of questions. I was still crying….then I suddenly felt like reading the Bible. I just opened it and was going to read from where I had left off the last time, somewhere in Matthew I think. But when I opened the Bible, I was in Psalms, Psalms 62.
Something inside me knew it was God telling me to read Pslam 62. So I did, and the words just jumped straight at me. It felt so GOOD and reassuring, really. God answered my every question.
Psalm 62 (NKJV)
1Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be greatly moved.
3 How long will you attack a man?
You shall be slain, all of you,
Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position;
They delight in lies;
They bless with their mouth,
But they curse inwardly. Selah
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
9 Surely men of low degree are a vapor,
Men of high degree are a lie;
If they are weighed on the scales,
They are altogether lighter than vapor.
10 Do not trust in oppression,
Nor vainly hope in robbery;
If riches increase,
Do not set your heart on them.
11 God has spoken once,
Twice I have heard this:
That power belongs to God.
12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy;
For You render to each one according to his work
The verses in red really ministered to me that day. I realized how much God really loves us and He is truly our refuge. In verse 5, it says that my expectation is from Him. We do not realize how important that verse is. When we place our sights and expectations on things other than God, we are bound to get disappointed one day.
Man is not perfect and he is still subject to falling short but we have a God, who is all powerful, perfect and whole in every way. The things of this world are transient, everything in it is, including us. But we have a God who is everlasting and who will never leave us nor forsake us. Hence, our expectation should be from Him.
We should learn to fix our eyes on Jesus and then like the hymn when we ‘turn our eyes upon Jesus and look full his wonderful face, the things of this world will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace’.
As I read verse 8, I realized how we should trust Him at all times. You know, when we don’t trust God, I believe God feels sad in a way because, I mean, He is our Father, and which father would like it if his own son or daughter feels that someone else’s advice sounds better than his. We should pour out our hearts before Him, He should be the first one we run to, not the last.
I felt as though my spiritual eyes were opened that day as I read these verses. When you know who God is in your life, (He is my Saviour, Father, Jehovah-Jireh, etc), you get closer to Him and you realize how much you need Him.
Verse 9 describes men (meaning men and women too) as vapour and lies and put together, they are all lighter than vapour. Thus, the bottom-line here again: Trust God.
I was amazed and in awe of God that day for He knew exactly how I was feeling and basically He was telling me this:
Trust me with everything; I am your Refuge, your Salvation, your Strength and your Rock. Don’t expect anything from this world, everything in it is a lie, I am the Truth and I am always there for you. He is telling you this today too. God loves you.
