Glocality: Gobal Trends In Local Realities

Watching world politics and follow its economic crisis, it’s time to take our lemons and make some lemonade! I’m reflecting on some trends; socio-religious, cultural etc. First, Globalization is here to stay, whether we like it or not, the world today has shrunk and we are all wired together! In spite of the IMF and WTO or AMWAY for that matter, most people today are like me – “international”!

Bravo! Indian Church!! Stunned! Shocked!! Speechless

When I carefully observed, the old charismatic leaders have already faded away. It was young pastors and leaders, who were not known beyond their town or areas who had girded their loins and hit the streets. These youngsters do not believe in consultations, discussions, (which they believe as lot of talks and not work) but plunge into action in their own way and style. Only through network, they get connected to share and get encouraged.

Ten Things Congregations Wish Their Pastor Understood

Congregations wish their pastor would preach messages relevant to their daily needs and struggles. Congregations wish their pastor understood the high demands of their schedules. Congregations wish their pastor would be transparent and sincere instead of only relating to them when under the anointing from the pulpit. Congregations wish their pastor would develop and release ministries that meet the felt needs of the congregation.

Diasporas – People on the Move

We need to educate our congregations to be effectively relational in our “global neighborhood.”  We need to try the new Somalian restaurant (for example) and then invite our friends there to expose them to the culture of our new neighbours.  It is important for Christians to build cultural awareness that will result to authentic relationships making them credible witnesses for Jesus Christ . . .  . We now have an unprecedented opportunity to introduce the Diasporas to Jesus Christ and invite them to become part of His Church.  With Lausanne Diasporas, we are proactively responding to this major global trend of Diasporas and the Diaspora issue will be addressed at Cape Town 2010.  Pray that Diaspora Missions will be embraced by the Whole Church.

Ten Ways Muslims View Christianity

The following is based on numerous personal conversations with Muslims, personal study, and intensive training I received from a missions organization in preparation for one month of outreach in a Muslim nation in 1979.
The astonishing thing about my conversations with Muslims is that most of them have the same moral values that Christians should have, and that this is one of the biggest stumbling blocks hindering them from believing that Christianity is true. (Most of them are very warm, friendly people. Some experts estimate that only about 7-10% of them are affiliated in some way with radical Islam, which is still about 100 million adherents globally.)

Why the Ground Zero Mosque Controversy is a Good Thing

National and local leaders (like New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg) are revealing their true views regarding religious freedom, their willingness to fight or pander to terrorist groups, as well as their love and respect for the Christian religion. For example, while Mayor Bloomberg is passionately supporting the building of the Ground Zero mosque, thus far he has not said anything publicly about helping the Greek Orthodox people rebuild after their church building was destroyed when one of the World Trade Center towers collapsed upon it on 9/11.

Missions – Measuring Depth of Commitment

Mission-minded churches attempt great things for God and expect great things from God. There are members who are good at making comments and criticism about what is and should be happening. As a result there is undue concern for self maintenance (cleaning nets), rather than obeying God’s voice or meeting people’s needs. Obedience always leads to blessing; delayed obedience is disobedience. Faith missions is simply taking God at his word. Attempt something so great, that it’s doomed to fail except God be in it!

Ministry & Social Networking Media Basics

It has caught up faster than we expected! Yes, I am talking about the social networking sites. Are you perplexed about the need of social networking for your ministry or church? Does the internet seem to offer you a myriad of opportunities but you don’t know how to get the best out of them? Before I go any further, let me say that, I may not be a media expert but our ministry’s media presence often is a topic of conversation with some.

Second and Third Generations South Asians

There are benefits and pressures of having more than one culture. On the one hand, young diaspora Asians have the best of both worlds. Their life experience can be seen as richer and more diverse than those who have knowledge of only one culture. They can have bhangra and rock, chapatis and chips, Bollywood and Hollywood.

What Does 'South Asian Diaspora' Mean?

The term 'diaspora' refers to a dispersion of a people from their original homeland. It was originally used to refer to the dispersion of the Jews from Palestine, following the Babylonians' conquest of the Judean Kingdom in the 6th century BC. Until fairly recently, it was used to refer to Jews living outside of modern day Israel.

Global South Asian Movement Birthed from Singapore Pastor's Vision

The international conference attempting to reconcile South Asians across diverse ethnic boundaries was started by a local Singapore Pastor Pritam Singh Sandhu. Crossing strong political and religious boundaries, the South Asian Global Convention SAGC 2009 gathered groups like Indians, Pakistanis, Nepalis, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis. The event, which concluded last week, was nothing short of a ‘miracle’ and ‘God’s hand’, said founder and coordinator Pastor Pritam Singh, citing remarks by attendants.

15 Years That Changed the World!

Over 1.73 billion people use the Web! . . . of which 738.3 million are in Asia  . . . that is 42.6% of Internet Users in the World . . . . the Internet is changing the world . . . . God is using the Web to transform lives. “The last 15 years have changed our world forever,” claims Tony Whittaker, coordinator of Internet Evangelism Day. “Digital media are transforming the way we communicate, behave and even think. If Facebook was a country, it would have the fourth largest population in the world.

Unleashing the Internet Generation!

Called the “Internet Generation” because the Net is their primary influencer, the 4/14ers (& their older siblings) are digitally native whilst their parents are digital immigrants. The world‘s children and young people between the ages of 4 and 14, the demographic group that has the potential to transform the world for Jesus are defined more by technology. It is true that due to lack of accessibility there are still parts of the world where the Internet does not yet have a major culture-shaping role. However, with the shrinking of the “global village”, more and more young people in remote areas will become connected as underscored by Luis Bush in the ‘Modern Context of the 4/14ers’.

I Lived Next Door To A Brothel

Reports suggest that globally, there are more people living as slaves today than at any other time in history. Unlike willful prostitution, modern-day slavery means having no control over your body. Your life is at someone else’s command. You cannot control where you are taken or how many men will rape you per day. You cannot control whether or not you get free time, food or sleep, and whether you get to live or die. And there’s often no escape. India, the world’s largest democracy, has the largest number of bonded slaves. At least 100 million people are involved in human trafficking in India, according to Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta (May 2009).

The Silent Revolution – Pray For People

We live in an an age where success is all about sound bytes. It is about being seen, being heard and being recognized. We want to be ’seen’ busy. We want to be where the ‘action’ is.We live and believe in ‘aspirational’ christianity and so all what we ’spiritually’ are is put on Face Book. We are ever in a ‘broadcast’ mode as we get lost in the craze for the world of megapixels and megabytes. And often times, we gain the whole world’s attention but end up losing on the heavenly joy of ‘rooting’ people in spirituality and ‘building’ them up to live out faith when it matters and where it matters.

Diwali Or Deepavali – A 'Festival Of Lights' – Triumphant Victory Of Good Over Evil

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a 'festival of lights' celebrated especially by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains. This festival is spread over three to four days and is one of the most anticipated times of celebration. Homes are lit with hundreds of deeya (clay oil lamps) during the season, to signify victory of good over evil. The day of Diwali is the highlight of this celebratory mood. Families get together to start the day with oil baths, then exchange gifts and sweets, followed by the most exciting event of the year - family fire works. Fireworks begin before the crack of dawn and go well into the day. No amount of description is sufficient to capture all the excitement and celebrations associated with the Diwali festival. You have to be there to experience it.
