GLOBAL DAY OF PRAYER FOR NEPAL
5th and 6th April 2008
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
In both the bloody civil war that has raged for more than a decade and the various uprisings, over 13,000 lives have been lost and thousands of people have been injured, displaced, orphaned and widowed. Much private and public property has been destroyed. The people of Nepal recently enjoyed a brief respite from the ongoing political upheavals and the deadlock in the country when the King stepped down and returned the power and sovereignty of the country back to the people.
Subsequently, a historic declaration was made by the parliament on 18 May 2006 in which the country was declared a secular state. Then an official cease fire was signed between the Government of Nepal and the Maoist rebels in November 2006, to the great relief of the people. This birthed a new hope for sustainable peace in the country and laid a foundation for the building of a new Nepal. However, the peace process has proved to be fragile and Nepal is struggling to reach a place of lasting peace in the face of many difficulties. There is a hope that the upcoming Election of the Constituent Assembly, scheduled for 10th April 2008, (that has been postponed twice already) will bring a lasting peace and stability in the country.
Therefore, the Nepali Christian community has called for a 'Global Day of Prayer for Nepal' on the 5th and 6th April 2008, focussing on the success of the Election and for lasting peace, reconciliation and healing to come to the nation. We would like to encourage the national and international Christian community to join together in praying for Nepal. We believe the Lord is doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:19) and beginning another chapter for the Himalayan Nation of Nepal. Please pray for our nation. Thank you.

About Nepal
Nepal is a small landlocked country in South Asia, surrounded by the two bigger nations (China occupying Tibet in the North and India in the South), covering 147,181 square kilometres of the lands.Map of Nepal.gif It embraces a part of the main Himalaya range in the north including Mount Everest (29,028 ft), the highest mountain in the world.
Administratively, Nepal is divided into five developmental regions, 14 zones, 75 districts, 58 municipalities and 3914 Village Development Committees (VDC). It is one of the developing country in South Asia with over 23 million people of different ethnic groups, languages and cultures comprising 86.5% Hindus, 7.8% Buddhists, 3.5% Muslims and 2.7% others. It is formed mainly by two groups of people who migrated from two different directions – ‘Tibeto-Burmese’ came from the North, and mostly inhabit the mountain and hilly areas, while Indo-Aryans entered from the South, covering plain (Terai) areas as well as hilly areas.
After a long internal political war between the Government of Nepal and the Maoists for over 10 years, currently there is a ceasefire being held in the country. The tri-polar political power tussle between the King, Maoist rebels, and the alliance of the seven mainline democratic political parties have ended when the King stepped down from the executive power in April 2006 and restored the parliament which was dissolved by him in 2005. Since then, the restored parliament has made the significant proclamations including declaring Nepal as a secular kingdom, which was known as the only Hindu Kingdom in the world in the past.
TURNING THE PRAYERS INTO ACTION
Isaiah 48:5-9
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD ? "Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I...
MISSION AND BELIEF
In cooperation and partnership with the Nepali Christian community, friends and partners of Nepal around the world, we would like to serve individuals and communities in the rural parts of Nepal to address both physical and spiritual needs through various micro level projects and programmes.
We believe people are under the bondage of sin and oppressed by the spiritual darkness, which is a major cause of poverty and a corrupt society. We believe the spiritual transformation is the key and it opens up the door to bring about physical transformation that upraises not just the life standard but to help people to live with happy, peace, love, hope and meaningful lives in the family and community. We would like to raise a trained indigenous leader with both vocational and spiritual training for each village community who would become an Ambassador of Christ and instrument for God’s will be done and His Kingdom come in the village or community.
SCRIPTURAL VALUE
Love the Lord your God with all our heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. (Mat 22: 27-39)
…go and make disciples of all nations, […] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Mat 28:19)
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. The Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. (John 15: 12)
Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name there am I with them. (Mat 8:19-20).
“The prayer of righteous man is powerful and effective.” (Jam 5:16)
“The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labour. For we are God’s fellow workers;...” (1 Cor 3:8-9)
“…May they be brought to a complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (Joh 17:23)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Cor 5:17). “The spirit of the Lord will come upon you in power, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.”
